I carry forward a family tradition shaped over more than one century of working quietly alongside families on the stewardship, preservation and continuity of wealth.
That tradition now extends across a small group of institutions devoted to long-term capital, independent thought and public purpose. Through The Merval Foundation, it also finds expression in my commitment to capital literacy, education and responsible decision-making.
My books and selected writings reflect the same conviction: that capital is not merely something to possess, but something to steward — with judgement, restraint and responsibility to the generations that follow.
A Principle of Giving
I believe that the use of money should be taught as a form of responsibility. In our family, giving is part of that education: a portion is set aside for others, while the choice of cause encourages judgement and reflection. For me, children matter particularly because they do not choose the circumstances into which they are born and usually have the least power to change them.
My personal giving has included support for both UNICEF and the United Nations World Food Programme, previously through recurring contributions and now on an occasional basis. I value organisations with established operational capacity, public reporting and accountable governance, allowing donors to understand how resources are allocated and results assessed.
